Welcome to the 7th International InES Newsletter!

 

2025 has begun with remarkable momentum for THI-InES, and we're delighted to announce the successful acquisition of three new projects: MaZERO will strengthen the e-mobility sector in Lesotho, STORE will develop an AI-based Smart Flexibility Energy Manager with partners in Cyprus and Tunisia, and Dig-E-Farm will focus on piloting an AI-based irrigation system for Tunisian agriculture powered by Agri-PV. 

 

We are also excited to announce the establishment of our new department: International Energy Research (IER). IER allows us to better showcase our expanding international research portfolio. The department will concentrate on cross-sectoral and decentralized energy solutions, with a strong emphasis on integrating renewable energy in diverse global settings.

New Department: International Energy Research (IER)

IER's research covers a wide range of areas including smart grids, off-grid energy solutions, rural electrification, sustainable mobility, e-mobility, agri-photovoltaics, and the water-energy-food nexus. These are aimed at sustainable energy use in both urban and rural environments. With a primary focus on Africa and Asia, the group is actively involved in real-world technology piloting and implementation, working closely with international stakeholders to deliver impactful and scalable solutions.

RE.Act: International lecturer and PhD exchange

To promote collaboration and knowledge sharing in the field of the water-energy nexus, THI-InES hosted an exchange visit with lecturers and researchers from Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in 2024.

FACE-NDC: On-site assessment in Zambia

In February 2025, the THI-InES team completed an on-site assessment to inform the development of a capacity building program. The program aims to enhance renewable energy teaching and research at the Zambian partner universities.

Dig-E-Farm: Research field trip to Tunisia

In February 2025, the THI-InES team conducted a site visit to a biofarm in Tunisia to initiate preparations for the installation of an Agri-PV pilot plant. The plant will power an AI-driven irrigation system.

MaZERO: Virtual kick-off

In December 2024, THI-InES and partners from the National University of Lesoto and the NGO Technology for Development held a virtual kick-off for the MaZero project. The project aims to pilot renewable energy e-mobility to decarbonize Lesotho's transport sector.

STORE: Launch of new project

In February 2025, THI-InES along with its German, Tunisian, and Cypriot partners held a virtual kick-off meeting for the STORE project. STORE focuses on enhancing grid stability through AI-driven energy system integration.

International Networking

DAAD Conference

In October 2024, Dr Carina Mwatunga had the privilege of participating in the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Conference held in Indonesia. The theme of the conference was "Transferring Knowledge from Campus to Society and Economy".

BayFOR Excellence Lab

In November 2024, Dr Carina Mwatunga joined a delegation of Bavarian and Ethiopian universities at the BayFOR Excellence Lab in Ethiopia. The event fostered networking and explored collaborative research opportunities within EU funding programs like Horizon Europe.

Smart Energy Systems Conference

In September 2024, Simon Müller presented his research "Modern Benchmark of Adaptive Thermal Source Network at an Industrial Site" at the 10th International Conference on Smart Energy Systems in Denmark. The presentation detailed key findings from the Interstores project, focusing on optimizing industrial thermal network efficiency.
